Bodybuilding & weight training guide

Providing you have the correct well balanced diet in combination with your weight training program then supplements could greatly enhance what is already a great regime. There are many reasons why you could start to include weight training supplements as part of your routine, for example sometimes we might not have the time needed to prepare the meal we know we should be eating, or sometimes there are foods which are excellent when body building but we just simply don't like them.

The important thing to remember though is that they are just what the names suggest supplements and shouldn't be used continually to make up for a stable well balanced diet but just to enhance it. When taken correctly and in the right amounts they can be a big plus, some of the most popular types of supplements used for weight training are:

Protein

This of course by now is common knowledge to you, but to build muscle we need to eat a diet which contains a lot of protein, this is usually found mostly in lean red meat of course but can also be supplemented.

In order to create new muscle plenty of protein is needed and without it growth of new muscle is just not possible. Protein supplements come in the form of shakes made from powder and ready to drink shakes which are full of those essential amino acids found in protein.

Whey protein

This form of protein supplement is by the far the most popular; whey protein is used because of its particularly high biological value. When growth and repair of body tissue is needed high biological values are essential, whey is the highest form of protein available in any supplement and it is a form that is digested quickly to ensure the amino acids get to help where needed.

After a particular hard workout your muscles will be in short supply of glycogen, the recovery time is decreased rapidly if you can provide your muscles with much needed protein during this time.

Weight gain powders and drinks

A great deal of caution and common sense should be used before using these products despite the fact that most weight building websites and magazines advertises them as ways to "build mass easily" supplements.

Most of them contain around a 1000 calories per single serving, so care should be taken as the last thing you want to build is fat instead of muscle. On saying this when used properly they can be a great advantage when trying to reach your desired weight and meet your nutritional goals, just don't get carried away.

L-Glutamine

This is one supplement that is fast gaining in popularity in the body building world; glutamine is a rich amino acid which is found in the body and more particularly in the muscles. Glutamine is an excellent form for aiding in speedy recovery after a long hard workout and it does this by:

* Stimulating the formation of glycogen.

* Protecting immunity.

* Enhancing the synthesis of protein.
